Traveling abroad is always a special event, whether it is a long-awaited vacation, a business trip, or a spontaneous visit to friends. However, even the most carefully planned route is not immune to the unexpected: a sudden illness, an accident, or an urgent need for medical care can take you by surprise. In a foreign country, the language barrier, unfamiliarity with local medical procedures, and high treatment costs complicate these situations. That is why the medical insurance is not just a formality, but a tool that can save your health, finances and nerves. In addition, in many countries, having the insurance is a mandatory condition for obtaining a visa. It is important to know what terms the quality travel insurance should include to protect yourself as much as possible.

Why medical insurance is a must

Medical insurance for a trip abroad is not just a paper document, but a full-fledged contract with clearly defined responsibilities of the insurance company. In the event of an unforeseen situation, it undertakes to organize medical care, to cover treatment costs and to provide transportation to your home country. Without such a policy, even a minor medical service, such as a doctor's examination or a simple X-ray, can cost several times more than in your home country. This is especially relevant for tourists traveling to countries with expensive healthcare, such as the USA, Canada or Australia.

Your insurance policy should cover:

1. Medical coverage. The policy must include the payment for outpatient and inpatient treatment, doctor consultations, diagnostics, laboratory tests, medications and dressings. Emergency surgeries should also be included in the program, as they can save lives in critical conditions;

2. Emergency dental care. It includes treatment of acute toothache, inflammation, dental injuries. Usually, this refers to primary procedures: temporary filling, tooth extraction, X-ray or pain relief;

3. Medical evacuation and repatriation. In the event of a serious illness or injury, the company must provide transportation to the nearest clinic or return to the home country. Repatriation includes delivery of the body in the event of death;

4. Return of minors. If an accompanying adult is hospitalized, the insurance must pay for the child's return home accompanied by an adult;

5. Search and rescue operations. It is particularly important for tourists traveling in mountainous areas or at sea, where specialized rescue operations may be required;

6. Coverage for COVID-19 and other epidemics. Many modern programs include testing, treatment, and quarantine, but limits may vary depending on the tariff.

The existence of these points in the policy significantly reduces health and financial risks. In addition, insurance companies that have a 24-hour assistance service will be able to organize  will be able to organize prompt assistance in any language. This is especially valuable if you find yourself in a country with limited access to English-speaking or Russian-speaking doctors.

Exceptions to keep in mind

Even with the broadest coverage, health insurance has limitations. They should be studied in advance in order not to encounter an unpleasant surprise when help is urgently needed. As a rule, the insurance companies do not pay for services if the situation has arisen as a result of actions contrary to the terms of the contract, or in the presence of certain diseases. In addition, certain types of treatment may be completely excluded from the program or covered only to a minimal extent.

Most common exceptions:

1. Chronic diseases and their exacerbations. Most policies do not cover such cases, with the exception of emergency care with a limited payout limit;

2. Pregnancy. Even the emergency care may be limited, and the planned pregnancy management is completely excluded;

3. Planned and cosmetic treatment. Plastic surgery, spa treatments, physiotherapy, and massages are not included in the insurance;

4. Alcohol and drugs. If the accident occurred in a state of intoxication or under the influence of prohibited substances, the insurance payment is not made;

5. Extreme sports without an extended policy. Mountaineering, diving, motorsports, off-piste skiing and other dangerous activities require a special insurance package;

6. Violation of doctor's prescriptions. The refusal of prescribed treatment or unauthorized termination of therapy may lead to a denial of payments.

After studying these exceptions, a tourist will be able to choose the right program that will truly protect you, rather than create a false sense of security.Sometimes it is worth paying a little more for extended coverage than risking your health and your own funds.

Choose and arrange insurance correctly

Before taking out the medical insurance, you need to pay attention to the details on which its effectiveness depends. Often, travelers choose a policy based only on price, overlooking the important nuances. However, the cost of treatment abroad is so high that saving on insurance can lead to multiple expenses. When choosing a suitable program, one needs to consider the travel route, features of rest, and personal medical characteristics.

What to check before purchasing the insurance:

1. Scope of insurance. Make sure that all the countries on your route are included in the selected package. Some programs exclude the USA, Canada or a number of Asian countries;

2. Insurance amount. The recommended amount for Europe is not less than 30,000 euros, for countries with expensive medicine - from 60,000 euros;

3. Assistance service. The presence of round-the-clock support in the native language and proven partner clinics abroad is a major plus;

4. Coverage for COVID-19 and other viruses. It is important to clarify the limits and quarantine conditions, especially when traveling to regions with current sanitary restrictions;

5. Additional options. Sports activities, trips with children, business visits may require an extended package.

Your competent choice of medical insurance will allow you to feel more confident anywhere in the world. A quality policy will not only ensure the prompt organization of medical care, but will also cover all expenses within the program. This means that you will easily focus on the impressions of the trip, but not on finding a way out of difficult situations.
